State looks to boost recruitment for foster parents;
ATLANTA - The State of Georgia and the Division of Family and Children Services are seeking volunteers to become foster parents to children in state custody. Across the State of Georgia, there are thousands of children who are in the custody of the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Some of these children have foster parents but more families are needed to care for these and other children who enter state custody every month.
Currently, there are over 4,100 active foster homes in Georgia and 15,000 children living in foster care, representing various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. "Becoming a foster parent can be a valuable and rewarding experience and though there are challenges, you will appreciate the joys and rewards that come from watching a child bloom and grow while under your care, " said Director Mary Dean Harvey. "Our foster parents recognize the importance of the work they do, serving as nurturing and guiding influences for hundreds of children."
The need for foster parents in Georgia is great. Foster parents are not only needed for newborns and toddlers. There is a particular need for those willing and able to foster older children, especially teens, children of large sibling groups, and children with special needs (physical and/emotional).
